Egoism by AGAWA KoukoDescription from Baka-Updates: Romance between doctors: their fathers are good friends, and the sons haven't seen each other for a long time (since high school?). The story has a seme who is mean, forceful and seems to be unable to convey his true feelings to his uke.

gosh, how original!

sorry. not griping at you, of course. just felt like a little snark. :)

It's only original if the uke is weepy and falls in love with the seme after being raped. Now, why aren't there any stories out there like that?
20th-Jul-2007 03:29 pm (UTC) - Re: Egoism by AGAWA Kouko
yes! and why doesn't anyone write about the uke being rescued in the nick of time from a rapacious bad man by a good samaritan -- who then demands his body in exchange for the favour?
21st-Jul-2007 01:37 am (UTC) - Re: Egoism by AGAWA Kouko
LOL, you're both funny. Now if only I'd stop being influenced by seme commits rape/uke falls in love stereotypes in my writing...

oh, takashima kazusa icon! mmh.

seriously, rape is a huge dramatic hammer, and i am not surprised so many people use it. it ups the tension tremendously, and that means that "true love" has to overcome a much bigger hurdle, and overcoming that sort of obstacle rewards with a bigger emotional payoff.

considering how many people love those scenarios, i think it's only a minority of us who roll our eyes, so you can keep writing it for the time being. :) heck, even i like the occasional story despite it starting with rape (fujimi orchestra, answer).

Yeah, all that... and it's hot.
21st-Jul-2007 05:05 pm (UTC) - Re: Egoism by AGAWA Kouko
only if the seme is hot. :)

Oooh, and the uke is spunky. Takaba Akihito (Viewfinder's uke) is delicious.

I tend to not self-censor anyhow. My biggest hurdle to publishing with a publisher actually--I don't censor. I had rape in one series already, and rape in another. I self-pubbed the first story, have the second on Erotic Dreams as a serial (bi-monthly) story, but not too many publishers are willing to take a story with rape in it (especially one that gets compounded with incest). Once the serial story is done on Erotic Dreams, I'll probably self-pub it as well.

But it's true, isn't it? There's a lot of rape stories in yaoi. I always give my characters biological reasons (some are demons, or not quite human) or they have a culture in which their actions are considered unsurprising and almost expected, or I just set it up as a hurdle the characters must overcome in their relationship, as you said.

Have you read Lorie O'Clare's Nuworld series (published by Cerridwen)?

*off to download your freebies*
21st-Jul-2007 04:49 pm (UTC)
No, I haven't read that. Does Cerridwen take more risks than other publishers? I'll have to go check them out.
21st-Jul-2007 04:56 pm (UTC)
Oh, it's Ellora's Cave. Right. They seem to want sex in the first two pages or so of a story, and I'm a plotter. Plot comes first. Sex fits in to the plot. I like building tension toward the sex scene.

If they can handle that it's rape, I do have sex by the seventh page in The Pearl, but it's rape, and it's also incest. Between demons, but still...
21st-Jul-2007 06:05 pm (UTC)
Bleh to EC's format, then. I like the sex to be an integral part of the story, not the story itself.
21st-Jul-2007 06:03 pm (UTC)
Well, the Nuworld is set in an AU (I'm assuming), and there's definitely rape and incest (although, I think the rape is not written directly as rape, maybe more "rapish". Gawd, what an awful explanation. I saw it as rapey (new words, rapey and rapish). But, definite, definite incest.) It's not a M-M series (only M-F), but Cerridwen published the whole series (of 6 books). And they're well written (geez, I don't care for M-F with all the MM floating around these days, and I still got hooked reading them) which is probably the main requirement for any publisher (I would hope).

Oh, you're off to get my freebies? LOL

And you'll discover the other reason I sometimes self pub. I'm a POV rebel. I use any POV style I happen to like. In the Soulstone Series, I used omniscient throughout. My Loved Him series was my first experiment with first person, partly to see if I could, partly to prove it can be an effective voice for erotica. :-)

Yup, freebies are great! (And much appreciated -- how else can I test drive a new author before deciding to spend tens of dollars on them?) Now, I took a peek and looks like these are MF, and I'm all about the MM, so they're on my to read list, but about 5th or 6th behind BA Tortuga's new release "Long Black Cadillac" (which I think I'm actually going to drop and pick up later when I'm more amenable to a little 3-way in my gay romance/love story. I love my gay porn, but I'm an old-fashioned romantic at heart.), and a few other new MM releases.

My freebies for The Soulstone Chronicles include one primarily mm novel that begins the chronicles, but my main character of the series is bisexual and always will be. The other freebie in the Soulstone Chronicles is primarily mf, but the story reverts back to mmf in the follow up books. The Beast in Beauty on Erotic Dreams is a mix of mff, mm, ff, with a lot of badness going on, near rape, non-con BDSM. You can read Beast for free, but you do need a membership to Erotic Dreams to access it. Beast had a few good reviews. I'll be doing a follow up novel for that one. Nothing else free except my Tristan WIP on Livejournal. But my recent release on Freya's Bower, Loved Him to Death 1, has had two wonderful reviews and the royalties for Loved Him 1 are going to a charity. I have more about that on my LJ. :-)

i gotta say, i am totally amused by how yaoi seems to fly completely under the radar of everyone but its fans in north america so far. in our local bookstore there's explicit yaoi (not just ringfinger) right next to the kiddie manga on the same shelves. guess if you slap a "for girls only" sticker on the back, it actually magically works for not getting noticed by the usually hyper watchdogs of public morality. i am sure this can't last, but while it does, i silently chuckle to myself.

rape AND incest, eh? you really like to pull out all the stops. could i hope for twincest? or a catholic priest? i mean once you got demons you almost gotta have a catholic priest. :) *goes to check out those freebies whey linked to kindly*.
21st-Jul-2007 05:59 pm (UTC)
Twincest!! Chris Owen's Gemini (published by Torquere) is a must for hot 3-way with twincest. Yum. And for a really, really, REALLY good boy-boy freebie: Matthew Haldeman-Time's "Guys in College". Collection of his free short stories.
21st-Jul-2007 08:57 pm (UTC)
I'm surprised they took this if it has incest. I thought Torquere also had a no incest rule for submissions.
21st-Jul-2007 09:35 pm (UTC)
If they had one before, they don't any longer. A few of Sean Michael's books feature two brothers (usually more of a fantasy setting, where they are magical twinks hooking up with their beefy top), and Lorne Rodman's Bullriders is a menage with two brothers and another guy.
21st-Jul-2007 09:44 pm (UTC)
Interesting. Perhaps the obscenity scare is dying down. Many of these sub rules arrived because of obscenity laws and a few sites that shut down.
22nd-Jul-2007 03:55 am (UTC)
Stupid obscenity laws taking away all our fun.

Not twincest and no priests because its not based on Catholic mythology. The Pearl had heavy yaoi influence and it's set in feudal Japan, up in the northern islands. The demons are animals with the ability to shift into human shapes. The incest is specifically between uncle and nephew. They're deer demons (elk) from North America. The nephew is the product of a human/demon coupling. His mother ran away from the herd. The herd is almost extinct, hunted down by the wolf tribe, and the females have to breed with brothers and uncles. The does all escaped at once, took off all over the world, to spread their genes wherever they could while hiding from the wolf tribe. And that's why this uncle shows up in Japan looking for his doe (sister) and finds his nephew who still hasn't quickened (taken on his demon heritage). That means nephew is pretty much blind and defenseless. The males of the species can kill an enemy via eye contact, and they're born blind to prevent doing just that.

I chose blindness as a theme so I could experiment with describing the world through other sensations. This story was also my first tight third person novel and it's all written from the perspective of the blind nephew who slowly gains his vision and power. He has a lot of dominance issues with his uncle. Worse yet, he's not just demon deer and human. His human ancestry has demon tiger in it and the tiger ancestry wants to kill him. Prey/hunter mixes don't survive usually.

LOL, as you can see, I gave my character lots of complications to surmount. It's mostly an mm story, but there's an mf scene near the end, between him and a demon wolf subordinate.

What happened to the good ole fashioned boy-meets-boy, boy-falls-in-love, boys-live-happily-ever-after Harlequin romance? XD

I'm waiting for Harlequin to come out with their new gay line: "Flaming".
21st-Jul-2007 09:43 pm (UTC)
Oh gawd, I was raised on Harlequin, and this is why I'm warped and don't do straight ole fashioned, I guess. Did you ever notice that Harlequin was almost always borderline non-consent or outright rape and girl falls in love with her rapist bastard husband who will likely two-time her eventually because he's a womanizer and real womanizers just keep on womanizing and Harlequin writers just ignore these details of reality...

pant, pant, pant, must stop ranting.

Harlequin is like a bad word for me, lol.

Yeah, and so now I'm doing a Harlequin mm version for my own amusement, what with having yaoi-ish stories of rape and uke falls in love after anyhow. ;-)
